In recent years, the field of regenerative medicine has rapidly advanced, as new technology has allowed doctors to identify the regenerative cells your body uses to heal itself. Platelet-rich (PRP) is one type of regenerative medicine that harnesses the power of platelets, amplifying their natural growth factors to accelerate healing. Philip Regala, MD, in Naples, Florida specializes in PRP therapy, offering it to patients with a wide range of orthopedic conditions. If you have questions about PRP or you’d like to schedule an appointment, call the office or use the convenient online booking feature.
PRP Therapy Q & A
What is PRP?
PRP is a mixture containing blood plasma and a high concentration of platelets. Although PRP is a cutting-edge treatment in sports medicine and general orthopedics, it has a history of successful use in plastic surgery and dental and oral surgery.
How does PRP support healing?
Platelets, which are natural blood components, contain proteins called growth factors. Any time you suffer an injury or disease that damages tissues in your body, platelets travel to the site and release growth factors.
Growth factors stimulate tissue recovery by:
- Triggering new tissue growth
- Accelerating healing
- Regulating inflammation
- Recruiting stem cells
- Triggering collagen production
- Protecting healthy cells
- Building a supporting matrix
Growth factors work together with stem cells to rebuild all the tissues needed to heal your injury, including blood vessels, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.
What should I expect during PRP therapy?
Dr. Regala produces your PRP in the office by drawing a blood sample and processing it in a centrifuge that separates the platelets and plasma from other blood cells. You can count on high-quality PRP and quick treatment because Dr. Regala prepares PRP using the Arthrex ACP® Double Syringe System.
The Arthrex ACP Double Syringe System only needs a small sample of blood to produce a therapeutic dose of PRP. Additionally, your PRP is ready within minutes. By comparison, typical PRP systems take up to 45 minutes.
As soon as your PRP is ready, Dr. Regala draws it into a syringe and immediately injects it into the targeted tissues. He uses real-time imaging to view the injection and ensure your PRP is precisely placed at the injured tissues. From start to finish, your PRP therapy takes about 20 minutes.
What health conditions benefit from PRP?
Dr. Regala may recommend PRP therapy to relieve pain and stimulate healing in a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions, including:
- Osteoarthritis
- ACL tears
- Rotator cuff tears
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tennis elbow
- Iliotibial band syndrome
- Osteoarthritis
- Meniscus tears
PRP is often applied to the wound during orthopedic surgery, where it improves postoperative healing. PRP is especially beneficial for injuries that are slow to heal, or when the damaged tissues have a poor blood supply. With PRP therapy, you can achieve optimal rehabilitation of injuries and you may be able to avoid surgery.
