Knee Surgery Q & A

When might I need knee surgery?

Restoration Orthopedics develops customized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s unique injury and symptoms. Treatment typically begins with nonsurgical options. Then, your specialist discusses knee surgery if your symptoms and knee function don’t improve.

The knee conditions that most often need surgery include:

  • ACL tears
  • Meniscus tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Knee fractures
  • Recurrent kneecap dislocation
  • Infections (septic arthritis)
  • Synovitis (inflamed synovial membrane)

Some knee injuries, notably ACL and meniscus injuries, often need surgical intervention before conservative care.

The ACL seldom regains its pre-injury strength without reconstructive surgery. Meniscus injuries may also need surgery if the tear is located in an area with poor blood supply.

Will I have arthroscopic knee surgery?

Most knee problems can be treated with minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. Your Restoration Orthopedics surgeon makes tiny incisions and inserts a narrow arthroscope through one of the dime-sized openings.

The arthroscope sends high-definition images to a monitor. Your surgeon evaluates the joint, diagnoses the problem, and then performs surgery to repair the problem.

Minimally invasive surgery causes less trauma, which means you have less pain after surgery, a lower risk of bleeding, and you recover faster.

What procedures are done during arthroscopic knee surgery?

Your Restoration Orthopedics surgeon may:

  • Repair, remove, or transplant the meniscus
  • Reconstruct ligaments
  • Removed inflamed or damaged synovial tissues
  • Remove loose bone fragments
  • Realign the kneecap
  • Realign and stabilize fractured bones
  • Treat knee infections (drain infected fluids and remove infected tissues)
  • Trim, reconstruct, or replace articular cartilage (cartilage on the ends of leg bones in the joint and under the kneecap)

Most people go home the same day after arthroscopic knee surgery.

Does knee surgery include minimally invasive joint replacements?

Yes, the experienced surgeons at Restoration Orthopedics specialize in knee joint replacements using minimally invasive surgery.

They’re also experts in advanced robotic knee replacement, a minimally invasive procedure that offers greater precision and improved joint alignment and function.

There are two types of knee joint replacements: total and partial (unicompartmental). The knee joint has three compartments. If only one compartment is damaged, your surgeon can replace just that area, leaving the rest of the joint and ligaments intact.
