Gel Injections Q&A

What are gel injections?

Orthopedic gel injections (viscosupplementation) are a minimally invasive treatment that can ease pain and improve function in a joint. Injections contain hyaluronic acid, a substance the body produces naturally to lubricate joint structures so that the joint can move freely.

As you get older, your body doesn’t produce lubricating fluids as efficiently as before, leaving your joints susceptible to wear-and-tear damage and osteoarthritis. Injecting a hyaluronic acid gel into a stiff or painful joint replenishes lubricating fluids to prevent friction, inflammation, and pain.

Dr. Regala specializes in gel injections for adults with persistent joint inflammation and pain from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

He uses advanced imaging technologies to guide the injection into a precise location of the joint to promote better treatment outcomes.

When should I consider gel injections?

You may be a candidate for the joint injections available at Restoration Orthopedics if your joint pain lasts several months and doesn’t respond to oral medications.

Gel injections can improve the range of motion in the knee, hip, ankle, and shoulder joints and provide lasting pain relief. Adults who qualify for joint injections might be able to delay or prevent the need for surgery to repair or replace a damaged joint.

Dr. Regala assesses the health and flexibility of your joint during an exam. He might take a sample of blood to test for rheumatoid arthritis and request X-rays or other imaging tests to evaluate your joint structures.

What happens during gel injections?

During your initial gel injection at Restoration Orthopedics, Dr. Regala cleans the skin at the injection site. He can also provide a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the injection.

Dr. Regala may use ultrasound imaging to guide your gel injection into the joint. After removing the needle, He covers the site with a small bandage. Side effects of a gel injection can include mild swelling, redness, and bruising, which resolve within a few days.

It can take several weeks before you see a difference in your symptoms. Dr. Regala may recommend additional gel injections every six months to provide long-lasting relief of pain and inflammation.

Call Restoration Orthopedics to find out if you’re a candidate for gel injections. You can also book a consultation online at any time.
